Paddle on a Boat: on change

At work,
I use the boat metaphor a lot with the patients.
‘When you keep saying you need help,
there is more than that.
You need to also start noticing you are on a boat,
and you need to paddle yourself to make it move.
Don’t forget I am on the same boat with you.
We work together.’

In fact, it is not just the patients who gain from this wisdom.
I humbly remind myself my own ‘stuckness’.
It is so easy I tell others what to do,
but I am shielding away from my own problems.

Perhaps that’s why I have stopped telling people what to do.
Not that I stop caring about the others,
but because I know how difficult it is for me to change myself.

Find our own stuckness.
Step outside the comfort zone.
Find someone we can trust and offload the problem, but don’t just stay from the act.
But remember to give ourselves a deadline of change.
