Lives of the Vietnamese

Motorbikes are the main transport means for the Vietnamese.
One can be overwhelmed by the amount of riders on the streets.

The bikes are not just used for carrying the riders, but also products.
The most interesting thing is the variety of products the back of a small motorbike can fit in – the 2 persons piled bamboo hats, and even some animals like a living pig.

I again realize I experience cultural shock even I am an Asian myself.
It is important I remind myself that
expressing this shock is not
for the sake of showing my privilege,
rather confront myself with the brutal reality of the discrepant quality of living between these people and me.

These statements –
‘The world is much better than before. People in general have a better quality of living.’
‘Poor people can be as happy as rich people. They are even happier.’
should stop.

If we get close to the lives of the more disadvantaged and
have no intention of living like them,
how can we expect that those people can
be happy with theirs if they can lead a different life.
If they do have a choice.
How can we assume these people do not wish to choose between lifestyles of them and ours.
This is a difficult but thought provoking reflection.
